Your data
Privacy and cookies
This page explains what information this site collects, why, how long we keep it, who can see it, and what you can ask us to do. It is written in plain language. Questions go to [email protected].
Who we are
Justice for Patrick Clancy is a volunteer, pro bono project that preserves public social media posts about Patrick Clancy so that lawyers can review them. The project is the controller of the personal data described here. Contact: [email protected]. The project operates through that mailbox rather than through named individuals, for the safety of the people involved.
Cookies and similar storage
This site sets no analytics, advertising or social media cookies. The only things stored on your device are:
| Name | Set by | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|
__cf_bm, cf_clearance | Cloudflare (our security and content delivery provider) | Tells real visitors apart from automated attacks. Strictly necessary. | Up to 30 minutes; a challenge cookie can last longer |
jpc-consent (browser storage, not a cookie) | This site | Remembers the choice you made in the cookie banner so we do not ask again, with a random id, the time and the version of this notice. | Until you clear your browser storage or this notice changes |
| reCAPTCHA | Google (only when the submission form is live and you use it) | Checks that a submission comes from a person, not a script. Strictly necessary for the form. | Session |
You can change your choice at any time with the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page. Because none of the optional categories are in use, rejecting them changes nothing today. If we ever add an optional category we will ask you first.
What we collect and why
When you visit
Cloudflare and Google (Firebase Hosting) receive your IP address and standard connection data to deliver the pages and to block attacks. They process it as our providers under their own terms. We do not run analytics and do not build profiles of visitors.
When you submit a public post
- The screenshots you upload, the platform, the link you give us, and any note you add. Screenshots usually contain other people's public posts, including their account names and what they wrote. We preserve them for legal review.
- Your email address, only if you choose to give it, kept separately from the record so that it never appears in exports or in the material given to lawyers.
- A one-way hash of your IP address (not the address itself), used only to limit abuse of the form.
- The text of the attestation you agree to and the time of your submission.
When you make a cookie choice
A record of the choice (which categories, when, the version of this notice, which page) under a random id. We keep it so that we can show consent was asked for and given. It contains no IP address and nothing that identifies you.
Legal basis
- Preserving public posts and reviewing them for possible legal action: our legitimate interest, and that of the person the posts concern, in establishing, exercising and defending legal claims.
- Strictly necessary cookies and abuse prevention: our legitimate interest in keeping the site available and secure.
- Any optional cookies, if we ever add them: your consent.
How long we keep it
Evidence records, including the original screenshots, are kept indefinitely. They exist to support legal claims, and a legal record that could be deleted would not be a record. The storage that holds them is configured so that files cannot be deleted or altered once stored. Consent records are kept for as long as this notice applies.
Who sees it
- Authorised reviewers on the project, who are identified inside the system only by a reviewer number.
- Lawyers acting for Patrick Clancy, when material is exported for legal review.
- Our service providers: Cloudflare (security and delivery), Google Cloud and Firebase (hosting, storage, database, functions, and text recognition), located in the United States. Both participate in the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
- Courts and other parties, if the material is used in a legal proceeding.
We do not sell personal data and we do not share it for advertising.
Third-party content
The home page shows courtroom photographs hosted by news publishers (Hearst, The Boston Globe and CNN through KTVZ). Your browser fetches those images directly from the publishers' servers, which therefore see your IP address. Links to news articles take you to those publishers' sites, which have their own privacy notices.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to object to our processing, to ask for it to be deleted, or to complain to a data protection authority. Because the evidence archive exists to establish and defend legal claims, requests to delete evidence records may be refused on that ground; we will explain the reason if so. Write to [email protected] and say what you are asking for. We answer within one month.
Children
This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If a submission contains a child's data, tell us and we will handle it with counsel.
Changes
When this notice changes we update the version number and date at the top, and the cookie banner asks again for your choice.
